Crew 267 Sol Summary Report 04-11-2022
Sol: 5
Summary Title: Hanksville, we had a problem
Author’s Name: Marta Ferran-Marqués, Crew Commander and Crew Scientist
Mission Status: Nominal
Sol Activity Summary: Our crew woke up this morning at 7.30 am. Laurene prepared some pancakes for the whole crew and Paula, the coffee master, prepared some nice cups! Later in the morning, Laurene had her first Braided Communication session with her loved one, while the rest of the crew was working on the WoMars website and on some reports for Mission Support.
Early in the afternoon, Cristina and Laurene went out for an EVA towards The Overlook. Although they managed to reach the amazing spot, they had some troubles on their way back to the Hab. One of the rovers overheated and communications were not working. Concerned about coming back on time to the Hab, they decided to leave the overheated rover back and come both of them with the other rover. Once in The Hab, the crew contacted Mission Support, who managed to bring the overheated rover back.
Later in the afternoon, Paula and Marta went for an EVA to Zubrin's Head and Kissing Camel. The goal of the mission was to run two experiments with Lazarus, the visual odometry robot designed by Dronomy - a spin-off from Madrid, Spain. The EVA was successful, and the crew compiled valuable data.
After a busy and stressful day, the crew relaxed and had dinner together - Mexican night!
Look ahead plan: Tomorrow will be the mid-rotation day! 6 days at MDRS, time flies and the crew still has a lot of work and experiments to do. The main objectives for tomorrow will be to prepare a mid-rotation video, mid-rotation report and do a walking EVA mission to continue with exploration and Lazarus' experiment.
Anomalies at work:
- Opportunity rover overheated during the EVA towards The Overlook
- Communications are still not working while the crew is on EVAs
Weather: Sunny, 10 °C
Crew Physical Status: Good
EVA: 2
Reports to be filed: Sol Summary Report, GreenHab Report, Operations Report, EVAs Reports, HSO Report
Support Requested: Thank you Mission Support for finding and bringing the rover back! Image

EVA Report

EVA #7
Author: Cristina Vazquez Reynel, Crew Exec Officer and HSO
Purpose of EVA: Overlook exploration
Start time: 12:15pm
End time: 2:45pm
Narrative: In order to prepare for the EVA, Cristina and Laurene discussed with Paula and Marta what was the best way to reach The Overlook, as they tried to go there two days ago and couldn’t find the cross road with Brahe Hwy 1572. As the GPS ran out of battery and the crew couldn’t find Brahe Hwy 1572 by only using the MDRS map, they decided to use the satellite images of google maps in order to determine where the path was, although they were told not to use google maps.
When the crew thought they found the path Brahe Hwy 1572 on google maps, they drove towards this direction. When they reached the cross road mentioned, the crew realised there were no tracks on the road but weren't sure how a 'rover road with caution' would look like and so, they thought that the fact of having no tracks could be due to the rain on the day before. The crew managed to reach what they believed to be The Overlook, explored the area on foot and took some nice pictures.
After a bit the crew decided to head back to the MDRS through the same path taken before, and 5 minutes after leaving The Overlook, the Opportunity rover stopped working and a red light turned on. After waiting 15 minutes and seeing that the issue was not solved, and given that the communications were not working and that the crew needed to head back to The Hab on time, the crew decided to leave the rover Opportunity and come back to MDRS with Curiosity.
The crew took the coordinates of the rover with google maps and left the rover with a red big flag in order to make it easier to find it again. On the way back, the crew communicated to the main hab the issue as soon as the comms were re-established.
The crew arrived to MDRS at 2:30 in Curiosity.
Later in the day, Mission Support let us know that we were off road and that the rover Opportunity was overheated. The crew feels sorry and apologises to Mission Support for any inconveniences this may have caused. It was not intentional at all to neither overheat the rover, nor drive off road.

The EVA was successful, and the crew compiled valuable data.
